About Tommy's work
‘Tattoos’ is a small project that took place over two months where I documented a range of tattooed people. My initial idea for this project stemmed from my Nan, and me wanting to show to her what people gain from tattoos. I wanted to portray the sense of empowerment and the promotion of identity that comes with having such a permanent mark on one’s skin. To appropriately represent this topic, I shot with people from different walks of life and of different ages.
Having tattoos in the modern world is quite normal, it is no longer something that is looked down upon or considered to be unprofessional. Of course, this outlook is subjective. I see this project to be more about the people, rather than the ink. Celebrating identity and our capability as humans to express our creativity in a way that we individually see fit.
