About Maya's work
Much of my photography is centred around the black experience; whether I am commenting on political or social issues, or just taking beautiful portraits; I feel committed to representing black skin and black stories in the media whenever it is possible for me to do so.
Through this series of images, I am questioning and commenting on how ideas of perfection and infallibility are projected onto black people in majority white situations. The imperfections in each photograph are small and stylistic, combined with highlights, smooth gradients, and shadow, create small juxtapositions through the series to draw in the eye and keep you looking for a little longer.
