About Maisie's work
Tainted by traditional displays of beauty, feminine ideology and male approval, self-acceptance has often been difficult for me. The mass consumption of media from a young age has contributed to this way of thinking, much like many other women. An element of my work concerns how women are displayed through both the male gaze, and their own accord, in the age of social media and modern society.
A correlation is presented between diamonds and the female body, representing the objectification and commodification we see of both in the media. My work investigates the way in which I see myself and other women through the female lens, presenting, not only, a subversion of the male gaze but a journey of self-acceptance and recognition of my own femininity in the contemporary world.
